This architecture is
very big and showy like
the Great Wall that is the
great stone building for
human being. The used materials
are corten, concrete,
gravel, glass and wood.
The harmony of these materials
is noticeable. The shape

spreading wall. It seems
that it had been there since
the original times. The
interiors of building
are enough luxurious to
speak the ancient chinese people's
luxurious life style. When
enters the private hall
of the building, anyone
can feel to stay in the
ancient noble house for
that the green mood of the
mountains, luxurious velvet
sofa and the brilliant walls
decorated the peacock's
tail feathers. As soon as
the space opens, the closing
of the space begins. The
volumes of the space are
the surging lines that cross
between decrease and amplification.

read that book, I was shocked
by the word that is hard
core of beauty. Is it possible?
The world of beauty. The
emotion of the beauty is
depend on the people's mentality.
No? So, that time, I had
thought that the architect
had big pride of his works.
But, When I visit this architecture,
I could understand the hard
core of beauty in my minds.
Unbelievable! How? Like
every beautiful scenery,
the roads to this architecture
in Alps were very dangerous
and a lot of difficulties
in driving. But that is
important and necessary
to understand this architecture.
Because this architecture
includes the nature of Alps,
at first, the experiences
of natures need to be based
on my spirits. The long
time of going there, I felt
that my existence is like
a small ant for the enormous
mountains and rivers. When
I arrived at the architecture,
I had changed to be something
that is a handful of soil,
a flow of wind, and a drop
of water. At night, my body
had exhausted by the hard
journey. And I entered to
the Hot Springs of this
architecture. I could smell
the air of Alps in the water
of this architecture. That
time, I was an another nature.
And also this architecture
was an another nature. We
were one in Alps. It names
a great nature.

find out the brilliant modern
one. For example, Frankfurt,
Rotterdam, and Seoul and
so on. Because of the war,
the city had been throughout
destructed and need to be
built in short time. Naturally,
there are no chance of rebuilt
the former architecture.
And the scarred city must
to go ahead new generation's
being. In that case, modern
architects have the dilemma
that is how to remember
the former identities about
city and to design new identity
for city. The modern can
be called as a modern one
in the antique worlds. And
the architect can draw out
the harmony from them, the
result of modern design
is brilliant. Here is the
harmony between the antique
and the modern. Kruisheren
Hotel had been built originally
as church in 15c. The
style was Gothic. But now
this old church has been
changed to new modern hotel.
The architect SATIJNplus
group's design sense is
very particular. I can see
the architect's respect
for the antique Gothic architecture.
In rear court of the hotel,
there is new modern building
that was constructed between
old housing of this village.
The material is red corten.

I like this building
for the following reasons.
In this architecture, I
found that the volume used
double skins on the building,
the ambiguous boundaries
through the changes of the
modules between the interior
and the exterior of the
architecture, and at last
swappable external panels.
And then, Let's think about
the initiatives of these
designs. In the past times,
for example, Gothic, Renaissance,
and Baroque times. The walls
of the architecture were
very thick. The architects
have thought about the wall
from the origin time of
the architecture. The wall
of building have been thinner
and thinner with history.
At last, these days we can
find out easily the wall
of architecture being swallow.
The architects have found
the space from the limitation
of construction. But they
have lost the sense of volume
that is called the significance
of the weight and gross
walls. And also, the past
stone buildings had the
endurance for the nature's
attacks that are the winds,
the rain, the strong sunshine,
and the dirt of the town.
The scar of the nature had
developped an another beauty
on the old stone architecture's
facade. But, the modern
swallow architecture have
many difficulties in front
of the nature's power. The
weathering acts are the
permanent homework for the
architects. Steven holl
had found the solutions
about these problems. He
designed the thick wall
but not by stone but by
the swallow steel panels
that have the punched mini
circular forms. These designs
had invented the new modern
beauties like a marble between
the former old architecture
and the new renovation.

famous ones. If I can compare
this architecture with old
Gothic one, I can tell you
that two matches and two
differences. The matches,
that are the coincidences
are the delicate composition
and shadow on the facade
of the building. The shadow
is like that the shadow
of the sculpture in the
Gothic architecture. The
sculpture always have the
shadow from the linear form
to the volume one, and from
the monotonous color to
the gradation one. And the
differences are the materials
and the changeable colors's
effects from the passers's
viewpoints. The architect
group UN Studio had elaborated
to this architecture. They
must have thought about
the shadow of delicate facade
design. These colored panels
are composed of double glasses
in the architecture's skin.
I can tell this design as
a new modern glow. The image
of the facade is different
and depending on that day's
time, climate, and the movement
of your footprints. These
effects are very enormous
to the first visitors. And
the attractiveness of this
image remains a long time
to the people. This architecture
have two facade that are
contrast as exterior and
interior's court. The exterior
of the building is very
simple and made with aluminium
that has monotonous gray
color. And the other interior
court has brilliant changeable
facade like this. The maximization
of these contrasts gives
strong impression to the
visitors. But the passage
of the people connect each
other like a mobius. In
other words, this architecture's
design made the face of
Janus.

of Switzerland. The owner
of Pfaffenholz Sports Center
is swiss. And, the user
of this center are swiss
that they are Basel's citizen.
The land of this center

They are different country
and speak different languages.
One use French, the other
german language. The people
of St. Louis didn't interested
in this sports center. They
don't use. If you want to
go Sports Center, You need
to pass by the Rehab hospital.
And you automatically go
over the border of Two Countries
without embargo. If you
think about it, It is very
interesting story. So, I
had started to study this
situations from the Rehab.
Rehab is the Center for
Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries,
in other words, Rehab is
hospital for the patients
about mental illness. Everyday,
the patients can see the
healthful people, and heard
the sound of healthful laughter,
and communicate with them
if they want. It is a wonderful
good idea for the ill patients.
The project is perfect.
And also, The architect,
Herzog's design is wonderful.
The architecture of Sports
Center had prepared the
big playground and the swimming
pool that is underground
in the architecture. The
unique point of plan is
the open wash systems for
the people. The image of
the left photo is open wash
space system. I like this
space because of the particular
and mysterious design of
the skin. The ceiling, the
wall and the pavement. They
are all the same design
patterns like a sea sponge.
The detail were perfect.
All materials of this space
were concrete. But it seems
to me like a marble. Sometimes,
They have the blue color
like a sea. At any rate,
The architecture has dynamic
volumes as double space,
crossing volumes, double
mass, accelerative composition
of the space, and so on.
But to me, The most charming
points are the handling
of the materials of architecture.
Herzog, He had used the
natural material like a
dry straw. In rear space
of the building, that is
swimming pool, I could find
out these natural material
used as a Role of Soundproofing.
It is necessary for this
Sports Centers. Because
.. near by there are Rehab
center. This Pfaffenholz
Sports Center cannot disturb
the Patients and don't have
enough money for special
soundproofing material.
Bur, In nature. Everything
is prepared. The architect
had known that.

Injuries. Like its name, This architecture has the significant meaning that
is to revive and reconstruction.
The overall of architecture's
design is very static and
has delicate details. There
are endless horizontal wood
lines, vertical line ordered,
and semicircular ceiling
windows on the roof. Sometimes
you can find the old oriental
style jar. Above all, it
is excellent that middle
yards and gardens spread
here and there. The appearance
and mood of the architecture
are enough for me to feel
staying in a deep, silent

functional building. But

Ricola's leaves. He had
screened on the plastic
that are semi transparent.
The most admirable
design point is that the

roof untouched. The rainwater

This is house for the DALKI. The architecture is no more than for the people

The first opening day, As many as 40,000 people had gathered in Santa Caterina
Market whose architecture belongs to the concept of METAMORPH constructing
epoch-making terrain that corresponds widely to TOPOGRAPHY. EMBT is an
abbreviation name of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. They are couple
architects. It is too sad that Enric Miralles died in July 2000. The renovation
of Barcelona's Santa Caterina Market began in 1997 and was completed in may
2005. They are winner of Catalan National Foundation awards. But more shining
points are that these architects had taken out the middle code in design between
the architects and the people. Even though the original traditional market's
covered the 3,000m2, new market has the construction 3,749 m2. The outstanding
feature of the market is its roof accomplishing 5,500 m2. This brilliant roof
coloured wave like carpet is a very lively points to the city. The roof made by
assembling 300,000 ceramic hexagons. There are a forest of steel pillars that
support the roof and create the movement in the interior of market. I think

construction site, architecture's basic structures had composed by prefabricated
concrete system made in factory a little former time. Its construction was
absolutely contrary to Norman's swiss hq in london. The film had focused in the
detail of the construction. And the landscape with new landmark of Agbar Tower,

insurance company. Norman Foster had realized the evolutionary environments in
tall building. The idea of structure is the band system that surrounds the
building and distributes the load of the building. So, The middle floor can get
the largest and the most wide area in it. The shape of curve in the high-rise
building can save the building from the strong winds like a typhoon.

If there exist an invisible architecture, this architecture can
be called as that. It sited at insadong in seoul. Insadong is famous for the
traditional zone that has antique architectures and the old shops and the unique
streets. Insadong is always full of the foreigners and the koreans for these
reasons. Insadong's culture has the nostalgia of the koreans for the traditional
lifestyle many times ago. Architect, Choi had designed the facade of the street
instead of architecture, composing the endless line of the people. It evokes the
sense of vivid, fluid, and changes. The center plaza is the role of Madang that
is the traditional korean courtyard. The street starts in madang and continues
to the each shop of four floors, and ends in the top of the architecture. When
you arrive in the roof, you can find the small park named as sky park. Like
these array of the visitor's movement makes them to feel emotion and then at
last their feelings can be exploded at the sky park. What did evaluate the
architecture? In this architecture, that is the people with a big pleasant
smile. |

One of my favorite cities is graz that has the harmony between antique old town
and new modern architectures with arts. This architecture is called as the
island in the mur river. There are "Insel" Cafe (opening in march 2003) and
Children's playground(completion in march 2004). It is so exciting that the
artificial island connects two zones as a bridge's architecture. One is old
town, and the other is new graz. I think it as a symbolic point. The wonderful
thing is that it provides with the new perspective views of the city. For these
reason, after the completion of the building, they had started to plan
children's playground. You can find new material that is nirosta steel.
Architect Vito Acconci has used this material as peepholes composed of lattices
for glass windows. Therefore, it shows a deep effects that is from the interior
and the exterior of architecture to the surroundings of the mur river. The shell
of architecture contains an open-air theatre. Underneath the dome, one finds a
cafe "Insel". Meanwhile, the american architect and artist, Robert Punkenhofer,
who had planned the idea of this project had said as follows. : "We wanted to
design a place that is divided into two specific zones, and these zones should
gradually merge." |

Completed in June, 2003, Tokyo Prada Shop gives to me the ambiguous images for
the ripples of its surface's double glasses. Watching its structure like as the
glowing diamond with the spirit of myself, I could understand it composed of the
60° and 30° angles. Specifically, the landscape of funky style in front of the
entrance produces the unusual exotic atmospheres at the traditional area in
tokyo. It is enough to get the passerby's sights. Rem Koolhaas is responsible
for the concept of this building, designed by Herzog and de Meuron.

galleries. Especially, Rafael said that the lobby of the theater as the trays
that is the concepts supporting the underneath of theaters. |

new city. Now, In this new city, 54 buildings has built as diverse facilities
for citizens. In the Introduction of this film, The doctor of Tokyo University
explains to me that this city gives to citizen the pleasure and the happiness of
life. Like her explanation, Minato Mirai is the street of love and pleasant
shopping. The last scene of the film is the ship that was built in 1930. Its
name is hakawamaru meaning "Queen of the Pacific". |
