Abalos + Peter Halley
- Usera Library / Madrid |
|
 movie running time : 4'
19'' place
: Madrid, Spain architect
: Abalos
|
World-class wall paper designer, Peter Halley had
cooperated with spanish
architect Abalos in
this library. I think
that this architecture's
thema is ATMOSPHERE.
I could found several
important things in
this new madrid library.
There are the potent
sunshine of madrid,
the darkness of the
intermediate phase through
break sunshine(breeze
Soleil), high level's
ceiling in the reading
room, the high reflection
of the ceiling, the
strong darkness of the
pavement, proper lighting
system, and the wallpaper
designed with subtle
color. The compromise
of them had created
the a fantastic atmosphere space.
When I show this film
to my friends, they
could not believe that
this film about the
architecture. The images
of the architecture,
everything of them is
like new design area.
Conversely, they had questioned
to me this film is for
the design and the painting.

Wiel Arets
- Academy for Art and Architecture / Maastricht |

 movie running time : 3'
23'' place : Maastricht,
Holland architect : Wiel
Arets
|
According to the records
about this architecture,
this building had started
to construct in 1989, and
completed in 1992. Of course,
through the world competition,
the architect Wiel Arets
was the first prizewinner.
Since that moment, Wiel
Arets had named worldly.
In order to understand his
design world, I had edited
this film with a different
style. The film starts
in the studio of Wiel Arets,
and then, the housing in
front of the studio, and
then, the university of
Maastricht, and the old
church with landmark image
in this city, and Finally,
I had met this architecture.
I think that this process
of this film is like the
process of development about
architectural design, The
main context of architecture
can be reach out from the
context of the city. I want
you to remember that each
array of the window, the
placement of the space,
the composition of the volume,
the drains from the roof,
and finally the sense of
the color in this architecture.
You can find the similar
design between the architecture
and the city.

In a design methodology,
The fresh results of design
were frequently delivered
from some ideas and concepts.
Even though we know well
this methodology through
the theory and the book,
In fact, It is very difficult
for us to apply this in
the design process. But
the architect Will Alsop
had released very clearly
this methodology in his
architecture. In the design
of Peckam Library, the most
particular point is POD
in the center of the building.
In order words, The POD
is the core of the design.
Like this, proper idea can
arrive in the perfect design.
Let's find the connection
from the POD in the interior
to the exterior. If you
find, you can understand
the column skewed in the
exterior of the building.

- Central Library of TU Delft / Delft

 movie running time : 8'
46'' place : Delft ,
Holland architect : MECANOO
|
MECANOO is the name of
the architectural group
joined in 1984. They are
always trying to create
new architectural form and
compose new spaces. Now
they are renowned architectural
group. Completed in 1998,
Central Library of TU Delft
is their representative
architecture. This library
is very particular in exterior
appearance. And this outside
form is still the basic
volume of the interior spaces.
They did know that the imagination
is the first step for the
knowledge? At any rate,
This architecture gives
the students a lot of the
imagination in the area
of the study. But, We need
to consider how to initiate
the design of this architecture.
I think only architect's
imagination is not sufficient
for this design. And I had
started to research about
TU Delft. This university
can be called a new city.
The masterplan had been
proceeded by the architect,
Jacob Berend Bakema, who
is famous architect in netherlands
since post world war II.
Bakema was one of the TEAM
10. And he had set up brutalism
that is new architectural
theory post war. The library
is sited in front of the
student union architecture
designed by Bakema. I could
assume that MECANOO had
used the context with the
Bakema's architecture. MECANOO
had created the new hill
on the TU Delft university.

| ¢Æ Neutelings Riedijk - Minnaert / utrecht |
|
 movie running time : 6' 24'' place : utrecht , Netherlands architect :
Neutelings Riedijk
|
To understand this building, I need to know the background story about this
building. Marcel Minnaert (1893~1970) born in Bruges of Belgium, He is very
prominent bio-engineer in netherlands. To celebrate him, De Uithof, Utrecht
University had prepared the land across Educatorium. Completed in 1997, this
particular building is called Minnaert as the name after Dr. Minnaert. There are
a lot of facilities about newsroom and data. For example, earth science,
physics, astronomy, mathematics, computer science and so on. All of them gives
the vitality to the students. The design of this building is so unusual that
everybody can perceive the sense of bio. The exterior are covered with red
concrete forming the bug crawling on the surface of the building. The
hallucinant interior with the arcane color has the spacious pond of water
gathered rainwater from the roof. These collected rainwaters flow overall
architecture that can protect itself from the outside's circumstances by cooling
in summer and warming in winter. What a good idea! It is really
bio-architecture. |

¢Æ Wiel Arets - Utrecht univ. Library / utrecht
|
|
movie running time : 5' 25'' place : utrecht, Netherlands architect : Wiel
Arets
|
As walking in the library, I receive the sense of walking in the woods. It is
very fresh unusual feeling. All the skin of the interior and exterior of this
library were designed by the images of the trees. These images can be found on
the black concrete walls, layered glass windows and so on. Like prada shop in
tokyo, Rem Koolhaas's idea are brilliant as a core project. The urban planning
has been implemented by Wiel Arets. And the interior of his library building has
the form of a dense structure dissected by narrow lanes and broader open spaces.
There is a spacious great hall which is located in the interior within concrete
cubes that can hover the six-storey overall space of this library. Suspended
between them are concrete platforms and the bridges that accommodate the
open-shelf areas and the reading places. You can see the students's reading as
walking on the bridge over this big interior hall's void. Completed in spring
2005, Utrecht univ. Library has equipped many facilities with the parking area
of the cars and bike, auditorium, gallery, cafe and so on. |

¢Æ Rem Koolhaas - Educatorium / utrecht
|
|
 movie running time : 7' 29'' place : utrecht , Netherlands architect : Rem
Koolhaas
|
Completed in 1997, Educatorium is the representative architecture of the Utrecht
University. In 1985, Rem Koolhass was in charge of the design of the master plan
for De Uithof campus, which is part of the Utrecht University. They were
satisfied with his plan, and also commissioned him to design the Educatorium.
The architect had completed this architecture as a milestone. This university
has many roles which are housing for the students, laboratory for the research,
sports for the student's health, art and cultural activities and so on. It is
like a life of 9 to 5 in a city. These university's intentions propose the new
life style in a campus. In Educatorium, We can find out them. This architecture
consists of examination rooms, lecture halls, public spaces, and famous
restaurant. The architect had designed all spaces created by sloping ramps and
floors. The main outstanding feature of this architecture is the concrete floor
that wraps all the architecture around its structure and then, It changes, It
becomes the roof of the building. Like this design, It is very interesting for
students who feels the freedoms of the spirit. Meanwhile, the interior of that
curve is finished with wood panel that provides a warm fantastic atmosphere. |

¢Æ Jo Coenen - NAI / rotterdam
|
|
movie running time : 4' 50'' place : rotterdam Netherlands architect : Jo
Coenen
|
The competition always gives a dramatic thing to the architects all of the
world. In 1993, six architects including Rem Koolhaas had jumped in the
competition of NAI. In fact, The Netherlands Architecture Institute(NAI) is more
than a museum of architecture. At that time, Everyone thought Rem to be winner.
In 1989, He had designed the masterplan of the Museum Park, and then he
continued to design the Kunsthal Museum in 1992. However, the result was the
victory of Jo Coenen. He understood the border between the Museum Park and the
city. Using the heterogeneous materials in the architecture, One can perceive
easily the 4 masses in NAI. All these efforts of architect were due to the
context of the adjacent circumstances. There are the fifth space that is
changing ripples of the artificial lake in front of NAI. It have different
scenes through 4 seasons. |

¢Æ Rem Koolhaas - NDT / hague
|
|
movie running time : 3' 54'' place : hague, Netherlands architect : Rem
Koolhaas
|
When I visit there for the first time, I could not find out what is NDT. NDT is
a abbreviations of Netherland Dance Theater. So, I started to study from the
Spui plaza. The Spui plaza of the hague is a meaningful place for this city. Due
to the Second World War, The hague's old architectures were almost destroyed
without the church of the Spui. Later, many architects had considered the
significance of the existing church. For example, The hague city hall designed
by Richard Meier, RO Concert Hall by Van Mourik, The hotel over the stairs of
the Spui by Carel Weeber and NDT by Rem Koolhaas. These all architectures have
shared with the plaza Spui. And everywhere of these architectures you can see
the church that was built in 17c. There are two axes. The one was created by the
hague city hall, The other's axis exists with the church. The Spui plaza is the
interesting cross point of them. Completed in 1987, NDT was the first project
for Rem Koolhaas. He had experienced many difficult processes to complete this
architecture. It had taken a long time for him to conclude the concepts of this
architecture. The role of NDT is the dance school with the theater. |

¢Æ Christian de Portzamparc - Music City / paris |
|
movie running time : 4' 21'' place : paris, France architect : Christian de
Portzamparc
|
Completed in 1994, Paris music city hall is situated in Park of La Villette like
its gate. When I study this architecture, I had found the very interesting case.
Almost the same time, Portzamparc and Bernard had started to plan the masterplan
of La Villette. Portzamparc is due to music hall, meanwhile, Bernard due to the
Park. Coincidentally, Each architect knows the other's masterplan, They are
surprised to the coincident matches of their designs. The music hall is divided
two masses that serve the students's education and music museum for the citizen.
The shapes of the architecture have many divisions and undulated roof. But their
forms are very geometric ones. Especially, The helical atrium has the a very
lyrical moods. What a beautiful space! |

¢Æ Dominique Perrault - Paris New National Library / paris
|
|
movie running time : 9' 13'' place : paris, France architect : Dominique
Perrault
|
Completed in 1989, Paris New National Library's site is under the river in the
southern of the paris. There are two axes in the paris. One is the horizontal
axis that connects from Effel Tower to La Villette, the other is the vertical
axis from La Défense to this Library. All of these are the contexts of the Seine
River. The zone of Paris New National Library is famous for the project of New
Town Renovation by Mitterrand, former president of France. In addition to New
Library, there are the apartments named as Bercy New Town, Some of them designed
by Henry Ciriani and Portzamparc. If one climbs the wooden stairs of the
Library, he can find out the great garden in the hole of the center. The
library's buildings are composed of four masses formed as the big books being
opened. This architecture is a transparent one. This fact is an unusual design's
solution for planning of library in a traditional way. But, the architect had
used the thick wood panel as a screen to control the sunlight. This film
separately proceeds from the Sunday to cloudy day. |

¢Æ Le Corbusier - House of the Brasilian Student / paris
|
|
movie running time : 8' 18'' place : paris, France architect : Le Corbusier
|
The first proposal about construction House of the Brasil in the University
International City of Paris had been burden to Lucio Costa by the Brazilian
government in 1947. In 1952, Lucio had summarized the idea about the
architecture and In 1953 he send a letter to Le Corbusier with a sketch
described in detail about "house of the brazilian student". While keeping the
basic architectural idea of Lucio, Le Corbusier had developed the original
outlines in a series of "brutalism" and "rationalism". In 1954, the result of
their collaboration, This architecture had been completed in paris. It is a
representative one of the twentieth century's architectural theory. The use of
concrete is a very flexible form among the masses, the materials and the color.
The use of prefabrication is a novice trial in that times. The design of
interior spaces is completed by the famous artists who are Charlotte Perriand
and Jean Prouvé. |

¢Æ Le Corbusier - Swiss Student Hall

|
movie running time : 6' 28'' place : paris, france architect : Le
Corbusier
|
In 1932, Swiss Pavilion, in fact, Swiss Student Hall had completed at the City
University of paris. There are dormitory and small congress hall, music hall,
and the other facilities for the students. This university has many diverse
student halls more than 50 countries. The request of this architecture was to Le
Corbusier in the 1920's second half. We can assume that Swiss pavilion had been
designed with Villa Savoye at the same time. So, In this film, I tried to find
out the 5 principles of Housing which are free facade, free plan, free wall,
roof garden, and piloti. When you close this film, you can know that the
principles of housing are adapted to this Swiss pavilion. The shape of the
column is like the dog's bone. Even though it is very big, It gives to me the
small and cute images. |
