 ¢Æ WEST8 - public square Schouwburgplein / rotterdam

movie running time : 2' 35''
place : rotterdam , Holland
architect : WEST8

Before the Second World War, Rotterdam was the largest trading port in the europe. After war, The city has changed and had made new masterplan for the new city. The main idea of the new city was interactivity.
But nobody had seen the result of the new masterplan. A lot of bridges had been constructed by the new ideas. Their positions were sited not by the natural birth but by the urban architect's brain. Their plan were not proper. And the result of that, Rotterdam now are not any more attractive for the trading port.

In Rotterdam, Everybody have the reminiscent of the past trading port images. This square has the reflections for the past port images in rotterdam. The main focus design is 4 hydraulic lighting elements that have the roles of the ventilation from the underground's parking space and the lighting of the square in the night. Those images are like that of towers in a port.

Briefly, Let's look at the yards of South korea's antique house. They are seemingly vacant, no object, no sculpture, no trees for the reason of the garden were traditionally placed in the back of the house. But, this front yard didn't vacant underground. This yard had been made by seven different materials. And It has seven layers. The process of the materials from the most lowest level are big stones, gravel, coarse sands, broken tiles, charcoal, subtle sands, and the soil. If the yard are made like this process, In a rainy day, Your foot can not be wet on the yards. The yard absorbs the rainwater as soon as falls.

Now, Again look at this square. This square has the name of Dance Square. I can assume that the meaning of that this square is the stage for the public. Traditionally, The european square and plaza had the slopes on the surface of the plaza for the rainwater. But this square is perfectly flat. Why?

I think that the strong reasons are the necessary for this new square. This square need to have the parking spaces for nearby theater, music concert hall, a lot of shops and restaurants. In the city center, The most important one is parking. So, this square had been raising above surrounding areas for the natural lighting and ventilation to the underground's parking spaces. When the square raised, what can you imagine that in the city? That's the stage of the city.

The surfaces of the square had been designed like a stage. And also, Like a seat in the theater. The proper spaces were distributed on the floor. In other words, They are designed something like a mosaic painting. The used materials are epoxy, coloured concrete, wood panel, timber panel, and the perforated metal panels. The compromise and array of these materials were so good for me to feel staying in the delightful theater in the center of city.

¢Æ Piazza del St. Marco / venice

movie running time : 15' 25''
place : venice, Italy

When I read the story about city venice, I was fall in the great emotions that were similar to the respects for the people who had constructed this venice. All the land of this city was artificial. At first, the people had prepared the wood column on the sea, next they had started to make the waterproof walls for the sea. And then, they assembled the soil from the other area. Finally, they could compose the land. At this moment, the architecture itself had the role of waterproof wall. In the sea, there are originally sea current that is like the natural road under the sea. The ancient venice people were very intelligent. They used this sea current for the transportation. And when they constructed the architecture or the lands, they had avoided the sea current. It asked for the enormous attentions. If you think about this story, You can feel this film with a great emotion like me.

Everybody talk about venice St. Marco plaza is beautiful. In fact, It is really beautiful. Once upon a time, Napoleon called this plaza as " the finest and the most beautiful living room in the europe."
That is well said. The St. Marco plaza had started to construct in 1100, and completed in the late 16c. During 400 hundreds times, St. Marco plaza had the canals. If you imagine this, Your idea for your architectural works will be changed. Now, I want to talk about this plaza in a different way that is architectural thoughts.

Always, Anytime, I had said to the architectural students as following story. When you go to the St. Marco plaza in venice, You must to go by foot not by the boat. This is very important for the architectural students. At first, the changes of the city spaces in the venice need to be felt through our body. Venice is full of small alleyways that are like a maze. Even, the width of some alleyways are under 80cm. We need to lost the road. And We need to have experience to find out the roads. During this hard process, We can understand the real venice. Finally, When we arrive in this St. Marco Plaza, We can feel the enormous volume that are made by the surrounding architectures that are famous for their beautiful scene.

And also, Everybody talk about the beautiful music in front of the open-air cafe. But, I recommend you to think about how originated this situation. The venice had been occupied by the Austrian troops in 19c.
The beautiful music has the influence of sad history. At any rate, This film start with this austrian music. The initial point of film starts with music in cafe that time when I had come out from the maze of venice.

In St. Marco plaza, There are several historic important architectures that are Ala Napoleonica built in the early 1800s by Napoleon ( now this building used for museum ) , Tower of Clock (Torre dell'Orologio) built in 1499, Basilica of St. Marco ( Church with Byzantine domes and asian mosaics ), The Campanile  with the height of 325 feet built in 8c, and to the right of the Basilica, The Palazzo Ducale built in 1797 with the venetian Gothic style.

 ¢Æ Piazza Navona / roma

movie running time : 3' 20''
place : roma, Italy
architect : Lorenzo Bernini

Ancient roman times in 1c, This Navona plaza was the competition arena for the chariot race course, Roman Circus. The times flow and flow, In 1651, the architect Lorenzo Bernini had designed and sculptured " Fountain of the Four Rivers " under the Obelisk. This sculpture has the symbol of the Four Continents and four famous river that are the Ganges river in India, the Nile river in Egypt, the Danube river in Europe, and the Silver river( The Río de la Plata in spanish ) in south america. The completion of these sculptures means the birth of the plaza. The necessary of the people's lives is very important for the changes of the city's appearance. The origin times, this plaza was for the recreation of the public, And then, in 15c, The market had transferred from Campidoglio plaza to Navona. Around the 16c, A lot of housing had been constructed surrounding Navona plaza. Finally, the maintenance of the plaza was performed by the architect. It is very interesting to me in studying the life of city. Thoroughly, the history of the plaza is converse to the Urban Planning in school and university.

¢Æ Michelangelo - Piazza del Campidoglio / roma

movie running time : 4' 38''
place : roma, Italy
architect  : Michelangelo

In the late 19c, Italy had a lot of independent movements from the other countries that were France, Austria, and Switzerland. At the same time, Karl Marx of Russia had advocated the revolution for the lower labors's group, on the other hand, Giuseppe Mazzini had advocated the middle class's republic. The democratic had been born in Italy. They like to talk about the politic. Traditionally, The plaza was always used for the field of democracy. This film is close to the landscape of ROMA. In other words, all important places of roma were assembled in this film. The focus is the scene of the people's movement. Because I want to deliver the meaning of the Campidoglio plaza. This plaza had been completed in 16c in honor of Marcus Aurelius's victory. Of course, the designer and architect was Michelangelo. The most particular character about this plaza is sited on the hill of Campus Martius that is the highest of the seven hill of Rome. The position of the other plazas in europe are lower level and in the center of the town. But, Michelangelo's Campidoglio plaza has the higher position above the city. It takes the stairs to arrive in plaza. Everything was very delicate intention. This plaza not for the public, but for the noble.

¢Æ The Spanish Plaza / roma

movie running time : 3' 15''
place : roma, Italy

This spanish plaza is famous for the film of Roman Holiday. The Spanish plaza is named after the The Spanish Embassy that situated at the left side of the plaza. In fact, the role of plaza is the long and wide stairs to the cathedral on the hill. This beautiful cathedral's name is Trinity designed by architect Maderno, Carlo(1556-1629). There are a lot of artists and street's musicians, in addition many lovers as well, besides the Plaza's Fountain designed by architect Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini(1598-1680). The obelisk transported from Ancient Egypt in front of the Trinity Cathedral has been the landmark of the spanish plaza.
