The only pedestrian bridge
had been built in London,
2000, in celebration of
new millennium. And also,
this bridge connects the
historical positions between
the St. Paul Cathedral and
New Tate modern Gallery.
I
think that the ramps to
the bridge are three dimensional
that has the Y-shaped form.
They were separated in two
ways that the people can
select the way they want
to go. The River Thames
is very dramatic and pleasant.
There are a lot of people
that do jogging and walking
with each other. Norman
Poster's this design was
supported by the special
structure system of Ove
Arup. When you go this bridge,
You can understand this
bridge' delicate intention
that you can see St. Paul
Cathedral anywhere on the
bridge. The solution is
that the width of the bridge
is 1/3 of the Peter Hill
Street. And Norman Foster
had made the ratio of the
bridge by adjusting its
handrail with a little slopes.

Is it possible? Yes. The
London's millennium bridge
is under the difficulties
of that reasons. On the
contrary, Look at this Campo
Volantin Footbridge designed
by Calatrava. This Footbridge
had been completed in 1997
beside the Bilabo Guggenheim
Museum. The particular character
about this bridge's structure
let it be swung with a delicately
feeling. When the connection
points have a small space
between the bridge and the
stairs, the loads are reduced
and the direction are distributed.
The steel great arches and
the deck on the bride are
curved. These structures
are supported on the side
point of the river with
a concrete but has special
forms. When seen in a distance,
This bridge is like a Parabola.
The total length of the
bridge is 75m, the highest
point's height is 15.3m.

There is a great rivalry
in here. The one is Spui
plaza, and the other is
Spui Metro. I took the the
following approaching methodology
to understand the Spui Metro.
In Spui plaza, there is
antique Gothic Church survived
from the war. In compare
with that, There is a giant underground rock
in Spui Metro. And The Spui
plaza has the wonderful
arcades made by Hague City
Hall. To step with that,
there is a clear arcade
through the underground
stairs in Spui Metro. One
has a fountain on the plaza,
The other has the fountain
of light in the gate of
Spui Metro. The former has
prepared cross roads, the
later has cross cool stairway
at the same time. Above
this land, Tram pass by.
Under this land, The metro
pass by at the same. These
situation of this position
gives to me the feeling
of the good harmony. In
addition to them, Underground's
world has the particular
line made by the light that
compose the artificial lighting
and the sunshine from the gate.
This light's line end in
the facade of Dance Theater
designed by Rem Koolhaas.
From the ending station
to the starting one. It
is a good idea! |

I had experienced the
perfect promenade feelings
through this construction.
It is a really great architecture.
In a distance, This Escalator
looks like a rock of the
mountains. The architect,
Martinez
Lapena had designed with
a great technology. At
first, It needs to excavate
30m's depth under the mountain
to prepare the basement
for this construction. This
hill's name is Rodadero
that is full of many big
rocks. These great efforts
did not reveal, just to
do for the existence. It
deserves to meditate. This
architecture made new flow
on and under the earth.
It takes speed, convenient,
reservation, great scenery,
emotion, and the beauty.
It can be subscripted
in one word, an intelligent
humility for the great nature.
For this purpose, the architect
should to use his technology
and intelligence. That I
thought.

How the antique city
Bruges(dutch: Brugge) had
accepted this futuristic
structure? For the designer
group WEST8 was just only
famous? I don't think so.
I can assume that this new
design means Bruges's new
spirit for the future about
the city. Now, Let's look
at the land of Bruges. This
land exists on the water.
There are a lot of small
bridge and canals. In order
to protect and preserve
this old city, It is prohibited
for the other local people's cars
entering this city. So,
the new station for them
is urgently necessary. This
futuristic design connects
Bruges and the others area.
This Kanaaleiland can be
called a symbolic bridge
for Bruges. We can find
out the reality of Landscape's
ability through this. West8
had showed the nature and
the things shall be natural.
Maybe they had predicted
this case. When you visit
there, You can see real
green all over the Kanaaleiland.
A lot of canals in Bruges
had prohibited the modern
cars's movement. But the
canals presents the beautiful
color to this land. I am
sure that what Bruges really
want is to proceed for the
future without ruining the
past. Everybody that visit
here Kanaaleiland can understand
well Bruges's dream for
the future without reading
city guide book. I think
that It is a real ability
of the architect, the designer's.
The design gives messages
like a language.

When I visited
there first time, I was
fall in a big shock by the
greatest artificial landscape.
In fact, The construction
of this architecture, It
takes a lot of plans and
drawings for the construction
every 60cm section. It is
enormous efforts and labors
for the designers. When
I visited there twice times,
I felt some bleakness. It
speaks to me that the artificial
landscape always has the
limitations. When I visited
there third time, this architecture
gives the sadness to me.
The original plan had a
clear circulation all over
the areas. But, later, The
management of the building
had changed to more easier
system. They blocked every
important point. The splendid
spaces were inhibited with
the barbed wires. Since
then, I did not spend my
holiday in Yokohama. The
architect group FOA must
have dreamed the new beautiful
landscape that is coincident
with nature. The creation
of artificial spaces always
need shortage of architect's
hands. |

When I met with MVRDV's
Eindhoven Airport Flight
Forum at venice biennale
exhibition in 2002, I was
fall in love with the beautiful
masterplan. So, I wanted
to know MVRDV's former idea
for the Airport life. This
film is about Rotterdam
Airport completed in 2001.
Maybe, the concepts about
two airports had been proceeded
at the same time. Rotterdam
Airport is the center point
between Hague and Rotterdam.
All facilities for the passengers
are prepared. For example,
the 24 hours bank , ATM,
restaurants, communication
hall, lounge and so on.
I think that this airport
has the idea of city that
compose the better life
of the passengers. Almost
passengers are interested
in the their business even
though they move to another
destinations. MVRDV must
have caught those motives.
I prefer Rotterdam Airport
to Flight Forum at Eindhoven
for Rotterdam Airport excluding
the developers. |

Basel is one of the most
complex cities in transportation's
network system. The train
tracks and adjacent highways
make the visitors crazy.
Signal Box's role is to
control and improve the
difficult transportation's
situation in Basel. In fact,
Signal box is renovated
building. Through the competition
in 1994, the architect group
Herzog & de Meuron had
won with wonderful surface's
design and new efficient
compartment in office. Completed
in 1999, Signal Box gave
the splendid facade to passers
by that are in a train and
car. The surface, immediately
the skin of this architecture
was made by copper. Do you
imagine the copper to be
used as a soft slice cheese?
By the amount of projected
light, by the point of the
people, Signal Box represents
a different feel. To me,
It is a shocking use in
the materials of architecture.

What is the backbone
of the beauty in architecture?
It is always to me a great
question. If so, Let's imagine
only just the pure structure
in the architecture. Is
it difficult? Here, Let's
see Satolas Airport. The
architect, Calatrava
had thoroughly excluded
the existing conventional
architectural design languages.
The structure reveals without
any clothes. Along this
principle, I can understand
the means of the Mies's
famous words that "
Less is More". The
gate hall of this airport
is close to the dramatic
future spaces. I call these
structure as a super body.
Once Calatrava had worked
in the company of Civil
Engineering, He had shown
a brilliant structural abilities
in this architecture. Like
flying bird, Airport has
the sense of soft and delicate
but strong. It is a perfect
balance. It is a beautiful
architecture.

In my life, the most
tedious and painful time
with a enormous patience
is a long flight. So, I
always expect the airport
to be a pleasant space.
I like Kansai Airport. Not
by the excellence of architecture,
but by the beautiful movement
of the art mobil under the
ceiling. Of course, This
architecture was wonderful.
But the reason of this story,
This film is my first architectural
film. That time, I just
only interested in that
mobil.
To change the subject,
Let's look at the architecture.
Kansai is a giant artificial
island. Kansai's the width
, the length are 4.36km
by 1.27km. Airport's length
is 1.7km. The roof area
is 90000m2. I think Airport
roof is the key of the structure.
In other words, The basement
of structure is not in underground
but in roof. The passengers
can perceive the stability
of the airport by these
upper art mobil. There is
no design without a reason.

1951. Meanwhile, In south korea, as soon as opening Yeongjongdo International
Airport, the existing Kimpo international airport has changed to the domestic.
Now Kimpo airport is looking for the activity by composing new great shopping
mall. The former international flight area will be able to configure to the
better commercial zone. Haneda airport is already in place for such terms as it
took place. Of course, There are several Advantages in Haneda. It is not only
the distance of 16km from Tokyo's center but also easy access, domestic copper
using the process of passengers, express railway, and concentrated shopping
mall. |
