This architecture has
the history of more than
one thousand. In fact, From
the moment of editing this
film, I couldn't make the
film about architecture.
Last a few years, I had
a lot of difficulties to
compose the space and the
design in the study of architecture.

This abbey had been built
and designed by the unknown
monks weren't architects.
They had selected the land
and constructed the building
and represented the new
era modern designs in that
times. This is a surprising.
How can we study the architecture?
And, How can we find the
means of the studying architecture?
In the document of this
abbey, The staring point
of building is in 1160, and
then sometimes was blocked
by the war, and poor situation
of abbey. But at last, this
abbey had been completed
in 1190. This abbey, Le
Thoronet is evalued as the
most excellent middle architecture
in the area of the Aix-en-provence.
In the world of Gothic,
This architecture had created
the new particular modern
design.
The film has been
pictured in 2005, 2006,
2007, 2008. Summer
and winter.

I am sure that this architecture is the masterpiece of Le
Corbusier. La Tourette had been built in 1960. There is the harmony of space,
color, light and music. Le Corbusier had worked with Piet Mondrian, and the
greek musician Iannis Xenakis. When enter the entrance, you can find the
colorful window of Mondrian at the right side of corridor. It is not easy to
confine the space of La Tourette. But you feel these spaces are moving with the
valance of the rhythm. Especially, the frame of the dining room's windows are
well presented by the slow and delicate rhythmical array. It can be called as
the musical space like the genre of Chaconne. They gives to me the feelings of
lights sculptured being dancing slowly slowly. Its windows were designed by
Xenakis. So, the background music of this film is Chaconne. |

When I finished making this film, I was very impressed to tears by this film. It
is so stupid, isn't it? It is very long time since the death of Le Corbusier.
And The Ronchamp Chapel had built a half century ago. But, I have not seen like
Ronchamp that always gives to me the greatest impression. When I entered this
space for the first time in my life, my heart had stopped. I cannot forget that
heartbeat. Such as emotion has been converted into the greatest passion for
Ronchamp, I had visited there every season, spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
This film is the results of 5 years's investigation of Ronchamp Chapel. I love
them that are the light of the windows, the sound on the hill, the color of the
nature and the architecture, and Le Corbusier's spiritual world. |

Since the completion of Ronchamp in 1954, it have passed more than half a
century. The left image is from the photo that Ronchamp village people were
singing sacred music of chapel. In the past film of Ronchamp, I had focused on
only architecture. So, This film presents the normal life of the village people
in Ronchamp Chapel. In interior of Ronchamp chapel, the adult do chorus the
sacred music. Meanwhile, the children play and run at the hill of Ronchamp. All
my thoughts and senses were completely wet by them. |

If Villa La Roche and Villa Savoye can be called as the rich people's
architectures, City of Refugees called as the poor people's one to Le Corbusier
for the first time. Even though this architecture's mass was sited very closely
to the road, the sunken space of the garden was able to protect it from the
noise of the road. Meanwhile, the bridge connecting the stairs from the road and
the entrance of the building gives to us the sense of a proper distance from the
passerby's passages and the road's cars. When one enters the hall, he can
realize the concepts of free plan advocated by Le Corbusier. It is still fresh
modern design that Breeze Soleil(cooling by shade). of the facade and steel
canopy shaped of V on the left side of the building.

The first proposal about construction House of the Brasil in the University
International City of Paris had been burden to Lucio Costa by the Brazilian
government in 1947. In 1952, Lucio had summarized the idea about the
architecture and In 1953 he send a letter to Le Corbusier with a sketch
described in detail about "house of the brazilian student". While keeping the
basic architectural idea of Lucio, Le Corbusier had developed the original
outlines in a series of "brutalism" and "rationalism". In 1954, the result of
their collaboration, This architecture had been completed in paris. It is a
representative one of the twentieth century's architectural theory. The use of
concrete is a very flexible form among the masses, the materials and the color.
The use of prefabrication is a novice trial in that times. The design of
interior spaces is completed by the famous artists who are Charlotte Perriand
and Jean Prouvé. |

In 1932, Swiss Pavilion, in fact, Swiss Student Hall had completed at the City
University of paris. There are dormitory and small congress hall, music hall,
and the other facilities for the students. This university has many diverse
student halls more than 50 countries. The request of this architecture was to Le
Corbusier in the 1920's second half. We can assume that Swiss pavilion had been
designed with Villa Savoye at the same time. So, In this film, I tried to find
out the 5 principles of Housing which are free facade, free plan, free wall,
roof garden, and piloti. When you close this film, you can know that the
principles of housing are adapted to this Swiss pavilion. The shape of the
column is like the dog's bone. Even though it is very big, It gives to me the
small and cute images. |
